How Wilks & DOTS Work

Both formulas multiply your total by a coefficient derived from your bodyweight, so a lighter lifter and a heavier lifter can be ranked on the same scale. The coefficient is 500 divided by a polynomial of bodyweight in kilograms — fifth-degree for Wilks, fourth-degree for DOTS — with separate constants for men and women. The calculator above applies the published constants for you.

Why Your Score Moves

Two lifters with the same total can have very different scores. Here's what drives the number:

Bodyweight

The coefficient falls as bodyweight rises. Cutting weight while holding your total raises your score; gaining weight without adding to the total lowers it.

Wilks vs DOTS curve

DOTS was revised to treat very light and very heavy lifters more fairly. For mid-bodyweight lifters the two scores are close; at the extremes they can diverge by several points.

Sex coefficients

Men and women use different constant sets, so the score already normalizes for sex — a 400 means a comparable level of relative strength either way.

Raw vs equipped

These formulas score the total, not the gear. A high score in an equipped meet reflects suit and wraps; compare like with like when benchmarking.

Tested vs estimated total

A judged competition total under fresh conditions is the gold standard. Estimated gym 1RMs give a useful self-tracking number but tend to run optimistic.

What is a Wilks score?

The Wilks score normalizes a powerlifting total against bodyweight so lifters of different sizes can be compared fairly. It multiplies your total by a coefficient derived from your bodyweight: lighter lifters get a higher coefficient because absolute strength scales with size. A 200 kg total at 70 kg bodyweight scores higher than the same total at 100 kg. It was the IPF's standard for years before DOTS.

What is the difference between Wilks and DOTS?

Both turn your total into a bodyweight-adjusted score, but they use different coefficient curves. DOTS (a 2019 revision) was designed to be fairer across the bodyweight range, especially for very light and very heavy lifters where classic Wilks was criticized. Many federations have moved to DOTS, but Wilks is still widely referenced. This calculator shows both so you can report whichever your meet or community uses.

How is the Wilks coefficient calculated?

The Wilks coefficient is 500 divided by a fifth-degree polynomial of your bodyweight in kilograms, with separate constant sets for men and women. Your score is then total_kg × coefficient. DOTS uses a similar formula with a fourth-degree polynomial and its own constants. You don't need to do the math — enter bodyweight and total above and the calculator applies the federation constants for you.

Is a higher Wilks or DOTS score better?

Yes. A higher score means a stronger lift relative to bodyweight. As a rough guide on DOTS: under ~220 is a beginner, ~300 is a solid intermediate, ~400 is advanced, ~440 is elite, and ~500+ is world-class. The exact thresholds shift by federation, weight class, and whether the meet is raw or equipped, so treat the level as a ballpark, not a verdict.

What is a good Wilks score for a man or woman?

Roughly, a Wilks/DOTS in the 300s is a respectable intermediate for most recreational lifters, the 400s reflect a strong competitive lifter, and 500+ is elite to world-class. Women and men use different coefficient sets, so the same score already accounts for sex differences — a 400 DOTS is comparably strong for either. Use your score to track progress over time rather than to compare against one fixed standard.

Can I calculate my score from individual squat, bench, and deadlift?

Yes. Switch the input to 'S / B / D' and enter your best squat, bench, and deadlift; the calculator sums them into a total and scores that. If you only have estimated 1RMs rather than competition lifts, the score is still a useful self-tracking number — just remember a gym max under fatigue isn't identical to a fresh, judged competition attempt.

Does bodyweight matter for the Wilks score?

Heavily — it's the entire point of the formula. The coefficient falls as bodyweight rises, so a heavier lifter needs a bigger total to match a lighter lifter's score. This is why Wilks and DOTS let a 60 kg lifter and a 120 kg lifter compare meaningfully. Always use your actual weigh-in bodyweight; using a lower estimate inflates the score.
